Am putting together a <strong><span style="color:#cc66cc;">DnB</span></strong> set & a <strong><span style="color:#cc66cc;">Prog/House/Acid</span></strong> set, each will have around 8 songs to stuff about with. I'll keep the links here updated with the downloads but the downloads won't contain the WAV content files (too big - mail me if you want them). Watch this space in the next couple of weeks for a <strong><span style="color:#cc66cc;">psychill/ambient</span></strong> set download. I ended up getting laser-cut mat-black acrylic, mostly because it was going to cost around $400-$600 to get in black anodized ali and I've ran out of money and need to be realistic. It ended up costing around $150 for supply and machining which is very fair, Jason @ <a href="http://www.plastix.com.au/">Plastix</a> was a great help and the job was delivered well above expectations. I basically provided them with my Visio layout, exported as a DXF which they fed that into their laser cutter and the finished product looks great.<br /><br />I'm yet to decide on getting any printing/artwork done on the face plate or not - it will do plain matt black for now. Also I need to annodize/paint the frame sides so they're black like the rest (annodized will cost around $70, paint will cost around $20). Also I might get some nice stained timber side pieces to compliment the overall design and match the look of my Virus KB, but maybe not. There's a lot more I should write here but I've lost momentum in the whole documentation process, my apologies.<br /><br />I had to also open her up today and fix some broken solder joints and fix hardware bugs, hopefully that's the last of them. Software-wise she's now running about 99% stable so that's very cool...I'm spending most of my time now working creative on the sets. There's a dnb set and a proggy set so far - I'll post both of them up here once they mature a little.<br /><br />As promised, in a few weeks I'll clean this project doco up and move it to a wiki page on midibox site so it's where it belongs. I'll post a link here when I do...till then there might be more to come....but some nice pics for now.</span><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01485.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 370px; The whole process has taken me like 2-3 months to finish, mostly because I have developed some kind of RSI in my neck and back and cannot solder or do much work, and have been seeking massages and therapy from an Osteo so I don't become a cripple (all a result of both this project and sitting down coding all day for work). Anyways I achieved the end result and are totally stoked with the fruits of these labours....would I do it again....<span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>no</strong></span>. To be honest I'm over it and just wanna get the thing finished now. That aside, I've also been working on the Live sets and nutting out how the sets will work musically so there's been some creative work in there too which is making it all worth it. Next wekend once I get things more complete I'll post update pics and all that crap - I'll also be sharing my Live sets and all the software too. </span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms';"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms';">So here's a couple of short vids I took tonight after I got half of the LED matrix going (red and green only at the mo) and still no face plate yet. Day 1 of 2009 and was back into it with half steam and a cracking hangover but, that's the only way you get shit done!</span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;color:#009900;"><strong>Success! We have liftoff for Phase 1!!!</strong></span><br /><strong><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;color:#009900;"></span></strong><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">All that's pending now are the RGB button tops and the top face plate. The faceplate I'll have in the next week or 2 - the layout for that is ready to go but I think the guys I'm outsourcing it to are not back till another week so I can wait. The buttons are another thing - I've decided to put this into "Phase 2" of the project - as there is a bit of work to this but I've pretty much mapped it all out in my head so shouldn't be more than 2-3 weeks work to complete. </span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">So now I'm spending time with the deck assembled and working and getting to understand it, programing it and work with configuring my music apps to interface with it, so there's some weeks just there alone before I'm ready to bling it up with nice LED's.</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Have to say I'm well chuffed with where it's all ended up at - it's been a milestone and I can't say how pleasing it is to have come so far and have a positive outcome! Now I'm shitting myself and are in a sweat about how many damn cables there are - I guess I didn't give this enough thought because there just isn't enough room for everything to fit in it seems - and it's too late to go back and re-design the layout! This is one of those lessons that no matter how much you plan and prepare, you're gona screw shit up at some point if you're not experienced! </span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01153.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 283px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 203px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01153.JPG" border="0" /></a></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;">Well after some serious cable management I finally got the channel strips to sit flush down on the bulkhead mounts. At first the whole thing sat about 1cm above the mounts which was disaster really, because it would mean a total re-work of the housing to allow the front panel to mount. I ended up having to put a lot of force down on this in the end and are not entirely happy about it but nothing else has to go in that section now so I should be ok (DOUT modules will sit under the master section buttons). </span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01164.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 283px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 204px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01164.JPG" border="0" /></a></span><br /><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;">Bolt everything in tight and we have liftoff! Programmed it all and got the MBLink feature to work and a shitload of debugging (had to rip it all apart and put together about 5 times to fix solder shorts, resolder pot connectors, replace blown pots and other crap) -in the end it was a lot of work but TOTALLY worth it! Because I wanted to play with the big boys and whack a mains PSU in my unit I was going to have to face those 3 evil little wires again. I seriously took my time with this part and used the multimeter to tripple check everything I did. My solder joints here will survive long after the last cockroach has died after the next holocaust, which is good. After I soldered everything up, went and bought an electrical fire extinguisher from the hardware shop and got '000' dialed up ready into my mobile phone it was time to plug it all in and hope nothing blew up.</span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01010.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 373px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 249px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01010.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Success - we have go for power sir!</span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div>noofnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05392810589783324066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707830460596435502.post-55338363457567619482008-12-18T03:40:00.000-08:002019-06-04T03:55:08.597-07:00connecting modules - master section<div><div><p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">As I said previously, my intentions were to connect all the modules up using fly cables and PCB mount strips so I had no daggy wires hanging off modules and it would be nicer to work on. Reality then sets in, you run out of patience and just wanna bring the thing to life....so you cut some corners. Having said this though I still had to spent a grueling 2 days soldering tedius and fiddly pieces of frustrating crap until all this was done...damn was it good to have this part finished! </span></p><p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Being cricket season I was kept entertained by the South Africa/Australia test match on TV. </span></p><p><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </p><p><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </p><p><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01025.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 230px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 169px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01025.JPG" border="0" /></a> </span><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01018.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 237px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 170px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01018.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />The top half of the master section showing the pots with the mounted new funky collet knobs (minus their color inserts).<br /></p><div> </div><div><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01022.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 230px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 165px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01022.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01020.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 229px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 165px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC01020.JPG" border="0" /></a><br />And the bottom half - the buttons. </span></div><div><br /><br /> </div></div></div>noofnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05392810589783324066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707830460596435502.post-44511068016366638782008-12-16T05:02:00.000-08:002019-06-04T03:55:43.474-07:00housing - external connectors<span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;">I wanted to keep connectors to a minimum - power + MIDI. For power because I decided to mix it with the big boys and try a mains PSU this meant an IEC socket and I decided for a switch which would control mains to my PSU (for safety I guess). Then I found some nice black square MIDI sockets at JayCar and decided to whack 4 of these in to cover for future extensibility. That only left 2 5mm LED moutings for activity MIDI in/out. I picked up a bunch of 10mmx10mm aluminium angle strips from Bunnings which made the job real easy. I made a design decision here to use bolts+nuts rather tha screws for all internal mountings - this was to ensure nothing rattles loose or gets threaded, and I'm sick of self-tapping screws snapping when you're halfway through screwing them in. First I ran a series of strips vertically which act as bulkheads, then I would build modules onto horizontal strips which would fix down onto the bulkheads. This would ensure everything is tight, rigid and strong so I (hopefully) don't need to worry about crap coming loose when I take the deck anywhere. Also I wanted to make sure when you push a button you don't feel the whole insides moving - and my main aim with all this was to have nothing mounting through the top panel except the screws that hold the panel down.</span><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span><br /><br /><div><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00903.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 229px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 166px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00903.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00904.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 218px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 166px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00904.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00905.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 229px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 167px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00905.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00906.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 219px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 167px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00906.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">First I decided to mount the MIDIBox modules onto perspex strips (Plexiglass) using countersunk bolts. Found one of those oldskool metal yards near where I get my perspex from - the guy running the show was awesome - gave me a discount and when I asked he said he can offer his workshop facilities up for a small cost - has all the tools you need and a lot of heavy machinery there too - good to know. </span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Anyways so he got one of his lackies to cut my panel. With complete disregard to this lackie having at his disposal every tool and state of the art machine with electronic vice guides etc, he was completly inept at cutting a piece of aluminium that was square and matched the given dimentions. In fact - he impressively managed to cut the sheet so that every single corner was out of square and no 2 sides were actually parallel. He invented a new shape. I'm not sure but perhaps there's an intensive add-on course you can do at TAFE which covers how to do this. Anyways...I spent about 2 hours filing, linishing and sanding the shit out of the sheet until it was close to square and would finally fit.</span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">As the old saying goes - <blockquote>if you want something done right - just don't give it to the retard at the metal<br />yard in Arncliff.</blockquote></span></div><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00891.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 273px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 208px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00891.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00892.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 271px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 208px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00892.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00895.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 273px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 188px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00895.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00896.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 271px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 188px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00896.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00894.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 274px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 175px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00894.JPG" border="0" /></a></span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div></div></div></div></div>noofnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05392810589783324066noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707830460596435502.post-2311436571009729752008-11-30T02:38:00.000-08:002019-06-04T03:59:39.848-07:00teaser pics<div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Just getting an idea how things will fit inside, thought it's a good progress post.</span></div><div><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00857.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 412px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00857.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00858.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 412px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 250px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00858.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div>noofnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05392810589783324066noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707830460596435502.post-84856959605274551222008-11-30T01:52:00.000-08:002019-06-04T04:41:21.096-07:00building the channel strips - pots<div>

<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">This covers the upper section of the channel strips - the pots. I decided I didn't want to mount my pots on the front panel and saw another user design where he used clear perspex to internally mount layers of components - I liked this as it added a challenge and should look nice and be easy to work on. Therefore I needed to drill 64 holes (plus another 64 guide holes) for the 8 pots per 8 channels. I gave this a shot myself as I had the perspex sheet ready to go. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"></span> </div>
<div>
<span style="color: red; font-family: "trebuchet ms";">*doofus alert*</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">I cut and sanded the piece to size and marked out my gridlines with a ruler. What I failed to do was use a set-square instead. Perspex can sometimes grab and crack when tooling and I had good drill bits but you need a proper bit (dowling bit) to do this the pro way, which I didn't have. Therefore I had to clamp the bastard for each hole - a grueling task that took me 2 nights to finish and a sore back. When I drilled the last hole, brushed it off and held up a set-square the holes were all off - some up to 2mm off in random directions - not very happy at all, but had learnt some lessons. In the end I decided to <a href="http://www.plastix.com.au/">outsource</a> this part as the cost was not too high and I wanted to keep things rolling. A few days later my plates were ready and it was time to drill the smaller guide holes and bolt in the pots. </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";"></span></div>
<div>
<br />

<a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00852.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00852.JPG" style="cursor: hand; height: 166px; width: 131px;" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00853.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00853.JPG" style="cursor: hand; height: 166px; width: 234px;" /></a></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">My pots (and most do) have a small tooth that juts out so it can be fixed and will not slip or spin around when you turn the knob to it's extremes. I drilled these myself with a 3mm drill and it didn't take long after I ruled my gridlines, this time with a SETSQUARE! Again the fangled laser guide feature on this drill press came through as quite a cool feature - go Ryobi!</span></div>

<div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms";">All drilled and ready to bolt in the pots. The upper plate seen is for the master section which I'll do later.</span></div>

What made this part real easy was using strip-boards. Otherwise known as vero-boards or matrix-boards they are copper etched PCB's with holes pre-drilled in a grid with standard size and layout. Commonly used for prototyping, they usually have copper strips or dots so all you need do is fit your components, solder them in place and you have a nice straight square layout without having to tool anything. </span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"></span></div><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00809.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 254px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 182px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00809.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Cut and sand the 4 boards down to size and drill holes for the mounting pins on the faders. </span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00817.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 216px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 143px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00817.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00828.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 202px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 144px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00828.JPG" border="0" /></a></span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Solder the faders in place, then snap in and solder the the tactile switches. In order to cut the copper tracks where needed I used a Dremel because I already had one and it was easy, you could use a razor, file or I'm sure there's expensive overpriced tools made for the task too. </span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;"><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00818.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 225px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 171px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00818.JPG" border="0" /></a></span></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Finally solder the grounding wires for the switches using wire-wrap then make and fit the fly cables for connecting the switches and faders to the MB modules (AIN & DIN). </span><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00815.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 294px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 203px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00815.JPG" border="0" /></a> </div><div><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00816.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 293px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 204px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00816.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">I was pretty happy with the end result and didn't make any screw-ups which was awesome.</span></div><br /><br /><div> </div></div></div></div></div></div>noofnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05392810589783324066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2707830460596435502.post-63448820669137984102008-11-27T20:02:00.000-08:002019-06-04T04:38:45.126-07:00building the housing<div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">When you look around some of the <a href="http://www.ucapps.de/midibox_gallery.html">ideas</a> punters are coming up with for their MIDIBox projects it's inspiring to say the least. I decided that rather than mod my old C64 case or gut an unused CD DJ mixer deck I wanted to build my own housing from scratch. Keeping things simple and cheap, I found a bunch of aluminium angle strips sold at <a href="https://www.bunnings.com.au/">Bunnings</a> that would do the job. Aluminium is a great material as it's cheap, strong, light-weight, conductive, safe & easy to work with and readilly available. My design was going to be a flat rectagular tablet, which I might later annodize or powder-coat to black for aesthetics. First would be make the rectangluar frame from anlge strips, then add a plate for the base and a plate for the top panel. When I get to that stage and if I still have any money left, I might get all the holes and etching in the top panel professionally done (for what I expect to be a hefty fee).</span></div><div><span style="font-family:Trebuchet MS;"></span> </div><div> </div><div><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00712.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 227px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 175px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00712.JPG" border="0" /></a></div><div><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Just getting an idea of how the frame will fit together. </span></div><div> </div><div><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00756.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 259px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00756.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Clamp and cut the angle strips to length, then flush off on the disc-sander. This leaves the edges perfectly straight and square. </span></div><div><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00762.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 194px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 215px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00762.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Finish off the sanding with some wet and dry. </span></div><div><br /><br /><br /><a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00722.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 212px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 155px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00722.JPG" border="0" /></a> <a href="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00721.JPG"><img style="WIDTH: 219px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 155px" alt="" src="https://361448566321-midibox-noofnydeck-project.s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/DSC00721.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family:trebuchet ms;">Clamp 2 pieces so they meet in a corner and are square, then drill the guide holes for the self tapping screws.
